With these markets each worth several billion pounds, investee firms’ output can bring predictable revenues, representing recurring income streams for investors.
Underlying EIS investee firm First Score Music (FSM) has used funding to help create and manage the rights to the film’s soundtrack, which was released in September 2018. This includes original music composed by Daniel Hart, along with three songs by The Kinks, Scott Walker and Jackson C. Frank.
Written and directed by David Lowery and based on an article by David Grann, The Old Man & The Gun tells the true story of story of Forrest Tucker, played by Redford. Tucker escaped from US prison San Quentin at the age of 70 to complete a series of heists that confounded authorities and had the public fascinated.
Forrest is pursued by John Hunt, played by Casey Affleck, who becomes captivated by Forrest’s commitment to his craft. Forrest also becomes involved with Jewel, played by Sissy Spacek, who loves him in spite of his chosen profession. The film also stars Danny Glover along with musician Tom Waits.
The Old Man & The Gun has been praised for its great storytelling and retro aesthetic along with strong performances. The film was nominated at the Toronto International Film Festival and London Film Festival alongside the Golden Globes, to name a few. It was also voted one of the top ten independent films of 2018 by the National Board of Review, USA.
The critical acclaim and award plaudits have raised the film’s profile, aiding its run at box offices worldwide. This is likely to have a knock-on effect on sales of the soundtrack. Successful distribution and sales of the film and soundtrack will increase value for investors in the EIS as FSM collects royalties on the rights to the soundtrack, so generating income for investors.
